GOP wins budget debate because America has ADD
"The question no longer is whether to cut spending, but how deeply. Rarely mentioned is the idea of higher taxes to lower the deficit."
Yeah, sorta what I thought.
And notice that, on the final days leading up to this, what were talking about? Not how to fund our social safety net, or fund the rebuilding of our crippling infrastructure, not the wholesale destruction of our middle class, but abortion. The red herring that both sides drag out every time there's a major game of 3 card monte to be played and they don't want anyone to notice what the fuck is really going on.
I am more or less of the opinion it went down like this.
John: We don't wanna raise taxes.
Barry: Neither do we, we got an election next year. But we can't give you everything, it's just too much
John: Yeah, Paul is an idiot but he's got all those teat party loonies behind him.
Barry: Abortion fight, then? All that rage over NPR and Planned Parenthood is genius, btw
John: I know, right!
*high fives all round*
Barry: Ok then, so... we all pitch a fit about abortion for a news cycle, and then we'll agree to cut the holy fuck out of the discretionary budget but not touch planned parenthood. Agreed?
John: Sounds fine, that way I can tell my loonies we tried on our deep commitment to "social issues" but nobody has to run next year on higher taxes.
Barry: Deal.
*high fives all around*
So. I know I've said this before, Lord knows my wife has heard this before. But I'll say it again, in light of this.
THE AGREEMENT WE CURRENTLY HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY ABOUT ABORTION WILL NOT BE CHANGING ANYTIME SOON, AT LEAST NOT ON THE FEDERAL LEVEL.
None of the major players in the GOP gives a rat's fuck about stopping abortion. Name the last time you've heard them mention it outside of an election cycle. The threat of it is just too effective to distract the public and fire up the bases. And the democrats either fall for it every time, which makes them retarded, or they're well aware it fires up their base as well, which makes them accomplices. Either way is fail, but my money is on option B.
So, the thing you wanna take away from this is that anytime anyone in Washington starts beating their breasts over abortion, either GOP or Democrat, you really wanna start looking behind you for whatever their trying to ram up your no-no place.
Thanks again, Mr. President, for not leading or fighting when we needed you to.
